In a region filled with dramatic landscapes, Chopta manages to stand out. A tiny, serene meadow settlement at 2,900 metres in the Rudraprayag district, Chopta has earned the nickname "Mini Switzerland of India" for its open green meadows, dense deodar forests, and a backdrop of snow-capped Himalayan peaks. It is also the base for the Tungnath Temple trek — the highest Shiva temple in the world.
Where is Chopta?
Chopta is located in Ukhimath tehsil, Rudraprayag district, approximately:
- 250 km from Rishikesh (7–8 hours by road)
- 40 km from Ukhimath
- 90 km from Rudraprayag
The road to Chopta passes through Ukhimath and Dugalbitta, and the meadow itself begins at the Chopta village — a cluster of simple tea stalls and camps along the forest edge.
The Tungnath-Chandrashila Trek
The primary reason most trekkers come to Chopta is the Tungnath Temple — one of the five Panch Kedar temples, located at 3,680 metres and considered the highest Shiva temple in the world. The trek from Chopta to Tungnath is:
- Distance: 3.5 km one way
- Altitude gain: ~780 metres
- Difficulty: Moderate
- Time: 2–3 hours uphill, 1.5–2 hours downhill
From Tungnath, the trail continues another 1.5 km to Chandrashila Peak at 4,130 metres — one of the finest viewpoints in Uttarakhand, offering a panoramic view of peaks including Nanda Devi, Trishul, Kedarnath, Chaukhamba, and Bandarpunch.
Chopta in Winter
Unlike most Uttarakhand destinations, Chopta is increasingly popular in winter (December–March) when the entire meadow and trek are buried under 3–4 feet of snow. The Tungnath temple closes in winter, but the snowshoeing and winter camping experience draws adventure travelers from across India. The rhododendron forests bloom spectacularly in March–April as snow begins to melt.
Camping at Chopta
Several operators run campsites at Chopta with tents, sleeping bags, and meal facilities. Camping here, with the Milky Way visible above the open meadow on a clear night, is a truly extraordinary experience. Prices range from ₹1,000–₹2,500 per person per night including meals.
How to Reach Chopta

- Nearest bus halt: Ukhimath (from Rishikesh) — shared taxis or rented vehicles from there
- Private vehicle recommended for best convenience

- Post-Monsoon (September–November): Crystal clear views, low crowds.
